You do not have to rearchitect your apps to move to the cloud… but you might want to

Cloud migration is not only about moving a virtual machine – or a number of them – from your on-premises data centre. It’s about relocating an important, working service; it’s about gaining the cost-efficiency and flexibility that cloud brings to all of your workloads.

This, of course, includes applications. As one of the most important services for any organisation, applications often become the reason companies do, or don’t, migrate to the cloud. For businesses looking to optimise application performance, moving them into a cloud environment is a no-brainer. However, many companies are concerned about the need to rearchitect apps to allow them to work on a cloud platform.

For example, if a company was looking to move a purpose-built, mission-critical application to the cloud, a number of factors would have to be taken into consideration. Years of investment would have gone into the creation of this IT asset, sitting in a vertically integrated data centre, with custom network, storage and compute. The common perception is that you can’t lift and shift an application like this, and would have to find a way to translate the on-premises IT resources to virtual software layers.

This is not necessarily the case. While it is true that some applications have critical legacy dependencies, and that migration of these entrenched apps to the cloud is challenged by moving custom hardware, legacy system dependencies (such as workloads that need access to an ageing database) and a complex network footprint to an entirely different IT environment.

This is one of the areas where certified AWS partners can assist companies in getting the most out of their migration. Before moving to the cloud, companies must have insight into their entire landscape, including the full application stack, and too many companies only move certain components to the cloud as a result of missing elements of the application stack. Certified partners like EOH can assist in gaining this visibility and keeping in control, ensuring the migration is painless.

The broad AWS partner and tool ecosystem, which is application, hypervisor and hardware agnostic, means that migration can be highly automated with limited or no downtime. However, while the simplicity of rehosting apps means that companies can get the benefits of migration faster, this is only the first step to gaining the improved security, resilience, agility and cost reduction that the cloud offers.

In fact, many organisations have found that applications are easy to re-architect once they are already running in the cloud, providing added benefits. Once the application has been migrated, it can be tweaked to make it more cloud-compatible. This allows companies to take immediate advantage of cloud by swapping common components, benefiting from cost and performance improvements, without the risk, complexity, cost and time of completely rearchitecting the app.

For example, there are some very common cloud services such as load balancers that can be immediately leveraged during migration to reduce the amount of virtual machines, configurations and operational processes to be migrated without changing the application. Similarly, companies have the option to just move their data and not their database to the cloud, and instead migrate to a managed relational database service such as Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS).

Once a business has seen the benefits this can bring, many opt to take the final step to add features, scale, or performance that would otherwise be difficult to achieve in the application’s existing environment. By turning an application into a cloud-native application, organisations can unlock all of the benefits of the cloud, including long-term cost reduction, increasing resilience, and becoming more responsive.

This, however, is the final step in the migration journey of an application. While it offers a great many benefits, companies who are only starting out on their journey can easily lift and shift their applications to start reaping the benefits of migration immediately.

As a certified AWS partner, EOH can make your migration quick and easy. EOH does this by providing the consulting, support and technology needed to ensure that organisations get the most out of their cloud.
